Greetings from Nashville where I've been recording the Original Cast Album of my musical F**k 7th Grade! We are just about done mixing. The finished album should be out on time for the show’s third consecutive Fall run at NYC’s The Wild Project (Nov. 1 - 16, 2024). Super excited about it.
While we were tracking back in late July, filmmaker Tom Ropelewski and his cinematographer Barry Braverman came into the studio to shoot some footage for a future doc project of Tom’s about….me! Their images looked so good that I decided to share with you a song. None of this is edited, they plan to splice shots of the band members, so it’s probably not something you will never see again, at least not in this form. Work-in-progress footage of a work-in-progress album.
"Sold My Soul" is in the part of the show where I find out I got dropped by the record label, which was a drag, but the worst part about it was that for a while, I couldn’t hear music purely anymore; I couldn’t listen for enjoyment. It became the enemy.
I feel like an outline
where the middle part is missing
and the moonlight is kissing
the details away.
I read like cliffnote
to a novel that no one will read.
And I feel like such a phony,
like I got ‘em all deceived.
And I feel like a punchline
that nobody gets.
And I bet you’re laughing,
and shaking your head.
I sold my soul,
and nothing happened.
Yeah, nothing happened
when I sold my soul.
I feel like an outline.
To a picture you started to paint.
Now the sunlight is fading
the colors away.
How’s it feel to have insides?
Something to hold?
I wish I could touch you–
How could I know–?
When I sold my soul,
nothing happened.
Yeah, nothing happened
when I sold my soul.
Just a big, back hole
and nothing happened
and I bet you’re laughin’,
‘cause I sold my soul.
