A holiday song about shoplifting, hats, and Leslie CaronDec 9, 2009 11:47:30 AM
I have been very lame with the blogging. By the way, I am catching myself putting "the" in front of all nouns, like a senior citizen ("I am now on the internets"). This is scaring me. Anyway, I was hoping to blog everyday on the tour, but was too busy and lazy at the same time (that is possible). Now that I am home, I will try to write something everyday. Let's see....oh, I met Leslie Caron yesterday (met = she signed my book). For those younger and don't recognize the name, Leslie played Gigi and the girl in "An American in Paris". She flew from Paris to get her star on Hollywood Blvd, and promote her new book. She was signing at a private Beverly Hills gallery. My cousin, Neal, is one of her best friends, so that's how I got in. She is still so amazingly beautiful. I did notice the difference between the older French women and the older Beverly Hills women that were at the book signing party. The French women dressed very classic and sort of hip; the Bev Hills women just looked pulled. Highlight: Leslie told me she liked my hat. And that brings me to the Xmas song of the day, "That Hat" http://www.jillsobule.com/resources/ThatHat.mp3 I was working at Barney's NY in the shoe department at the time. I saw a little knit cap that I loved in the hat department. It was blue and white striped with a little red pom pom on top. It looked like something Leslie Caron would have worn as a teenager. I put it on and walked back to my station to show my co-workers. They loved it and told me to wear it. They thought it looked very cute and appropriate for the holidays -it was 3 days before Xmas. I forgot I had it on as I clocked out and walked out of the employees exit. It wasn't until 3 blocks later, before the F train, that I realized that I had a $275 knit cap on my head that did not belong to me. What to do? Well, I never went through a shoplifting phase. I never even stole a candy bar. I had high morals as a teen, but more importantly... I was chicken. I debated fiercely with myself. The right thing was to go back and put it on the shelf. But what if the mean head manager saw me and I had to explain? She, the mean head manager, had jet-black hair slicked back and wore a deep red lipstick. She looked like the castrating boss in a bad 80s Michael Douglas movie. I walked down the stairs, got on the train, and arrived in Brooklyn with "That Hat" By the way, that song is on my semi-famous Xmas CD. If you order it now, you can get it signed and with a dreidel!
jillsobule.com/store Oh, "That Hat" was written with Bill Demain, who also, with his band Swandive, recorded a great version. |
